Tackling the District

Hey everyone,

I figured that since I'm exploring life in a new city for the spring and summer, I'd track the places I've been to hopefully one day help someone else when they are here potentially other DC Interns.

I love finding great places and would love to hear if you have any tips you'd like to send me or places you love.

This is by no means everything, but I tried to include some of my favorites and some places I'm dying to go. So watch out as I take the city!

Check out my map below that I've made of some of the best places to eat, visit, grab a cuppa, and go out on the town while you're visiting or interning in DC.

I'm going to give you guys some free DC hacks on top of the food!

If you have any questions feel free to ask, I'll try and tell you if I've been!

Here are some pictures of food from restaurants I've visited.

There is this amazing french restaurant on H street, that unfortunately google doesn't know exists. It's called La Grenier, or the attic. The lamb was to die for and their lobster bisque different from anything I'd had before.
I've been told that if an Intern pays for food in DC they're doing it wrong.

Naturally this is a bit of an exaggeration, a great secret to DC and working on the hill is the Captiol Grapevine  a website which tracks all of the upcoming events and receptions on Capitol Hill.

Some of these events don't allow interns but for the most part they do.
In the summer there is free music all around the city, especially on the Capitol. Fridays the Sculpture garden at the National Gallery of Art has Jazz in the Park, which lets you bring in food and drinks but no alcohol (they sell beer and sangria). Both of these options are great for a cheap picnic and a good excuse to get out.

The Smithsonian's are free and while normally only open during work hours, they are also open on the weekends, allowing for great free entertainment that interns don't need to worry about paying. They normally have a food court, and the best crème brûlée that I've found so far is hiding in the cafeteria at the American History Museum.

Depending on which side of the fence one plays for, the Conservative group called the Heritage Foundation, not only has internship and intern living, but they put on receptions and lectures almost all of which have food and are free to attend.

Looking for other things to do check out the Golden Triangle's twitter, they keep you up to date with all of the things happening around DuPont and above the White House.

Also as one may soon find out, brunching in DC is basically a necessity. You  may think I'm joking but then you haven't tried the crab cake Benedict. Or found out that this is the way to catch up with everyone and their crazy busy lives. Don't bother going out before 11 a.m. and if you're looking for great recommendations check out Bitches Who Brunch they give great reviews.

There are many other great opportunities in DC you just have to keep your eye out.
